Here’s something the Martyn’s Law conversation rarely covers: the person who is legally responsible is almost never the person in control.
You’re named as the Responsible Person – sure – but on the day, control is shared – with the venue, the contractors, security, the local authority, the multi-agency teams. It shifts by the hour. During an incident it can pass to the police entirely.
So if your readiness quietly assumes you’ll be the one calling the shots, it’s built wrongly.
The Responsible Person isn’t the sole operator. You’re the integrator – making sure the arrangements, the communication and the decision-making hold together across everyone involved.
And control, when you need it, comes from information, not position.
A clear shared picture beats a job title every time.
It’s a more demanding role than a checklist – but, oddly, a more reassuring one. You don’t have to control everything. You have to coordinate it well.
